In charge of the exchequers into which royal revenues were paid, early bearers of the names of Chalmers and Chambers thrived as loyal and trusted servants of successive monarchs, while others became kinsfolk of the clans of the wild and unruly Western Highlands.
Many were martyred in the cause of their faith during the bitter wars between Crown and Covenant, while others gave their lives in defence of the doomed cause of the Royal House of Stuart.
