With landholdings spread throughout what were the lawless Borders of Scotland, the Dicksons were among those clans known as the Steel Bonnets who frequently found themselves in conflict with the authorities.
But when the cause of the nation called, they were at the forefront of repelling English invasion.
In more peaceful times, Barbara Dickson is the highly acclaimed Scottish singer and songwriter and actress whose hit singles include Another Suitcase in Another Hall, from the stage musical Evita.
Born in New Zealand, Ngila [please note this is correct spelling] Dickson is an award-winning film costume designer.
Along with fellow costume designer Richard Taylor, she won the Academy Award for Costume Design for the 2004 Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, two years after winning a nomination for Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.
