Lee Family Name Mini-Book Excerpt
"One particularly notable bearer of the proud name of Lee is Nelle Harper Lee, better known as Harper Lee.
Born in 1926 in Monroeville, Alabama, she is known for her 1961 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel To Kill a Mockingbird.
The novel, dealing with issues of racism that she observed while growing up in her hometown, was adapted for a film of the same name in 1962 – winning actor Gregory Peck an Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of the character Atticus Finch.
The recipient in 2007 of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, she has famously said: “In an abundant society where people have laptops, cell phones, iPods and minds like empty rooms, I still plod along with books.”"
