Although the name originally denoted someone who worked as a baker, generations of bearers of the proud surname of Baxter found themselves pursuing rather less peaceful careers as they left their mark on the bloodstained pages of Scotland’s story.
As kinsmen of the clansmen, they fought in the most savage battle ever to be fought on Scottish soil, but in later centuries some of their more law-abiding namesakes founded huge commercial dynasties.
