The blood of Norman warriors who first arrived on British shores with the Conquest of 1066, flows through the veins of the Boyds of today.

By the twelfth century they had found a new home in Scotland, where over the following centuries they played a noble role in defence of the nation’s freedom and independence.

In more peaceful times, and on the stage, William Boyd was the American actor born in Cambridge, Ohio, in 1895 and who began his career in silent film romances but later achieved fame as the cowboy hero Hopalong Cassidy.

Also on the stage, Billy Boyd, born in Glasgow in 1968, is the actor best known for his role as the hobbit Peregrine Took in the Lord of the Rings Trilogy (2001-2003). He also played the role of Barrett Bowden in the 2003 film Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World.

Here is recounted the proud tale of the Boyds.

Boyd Clan Mini-Book Excerpt

"Louise Arner Boyd, born in San Rafael, California, in 1887, was a renowned Arctic explorer and the first woman to fly over the North Pole – a feat she achieved at the age of 68.

Born into a wealthy family, Boyd funded and led her own expedition in 1928 in an abortive attempt to find the Norwegian explorer Roald Amunsden, who himself had vanished without trace during his own attempt to find the Italian explorer Umberto Nobile.

Despite her failure to find Amunsden, the Norwegian government awarded her the Chevalier Cross of the Order of St Olav.

In the years 1931, 1933, 1937, she led scientific expeditions to both the east and north-eastern coasts of Greenland, and an area near the De Geer Glacier is now named Louise Boyd Land.

The intrepid explorer, who died in 1972, was also employed as a technical expert by the U.S. War Department during the Second World War."
