They have made their mark on the world through a range of pursuits that include music, sport and literature, but the Millars can also lay claim to a proud heritage rooted in the high romance and drama of Scotland’s story.

As kinsmen of the clansmen, they fought for the cause of the nation’s freedom during the bloody Wars of Independence with England, while in later centuries many rallied to the standard of the Royal House of Stuart.

In more contemporary times, and in the sporting arena, Ian Millar is the world show jumping champion who was born in Nova Scotia, in 1947, while Robert Millar, born in 1958, is the Scottish professional cyclist who won the ‘king of the mountains’ competition and finished fourth in the 1984 Tour de France – the only time that a Briton has won one of the major tour classifications.

Here is recounted the colourful tale of the Millars.
